We have an exciting opportunity for a Tarawera Property and Café Manager to lead our team at the Tarawera Café, 6400 Napier-Taupo Road, State Highway 5, Tarawera.

This individual will manage and oversee the operations and running of the Tarawera Property and Café, with responsibility for managing the day-to-day operation of the cafe. They will provide excellent service to our customers and promote and maintain an environment for all our customers and co-workers, with the key aim being to retain existing and attract new customers.

Day to day the role includes:

  • Property Management:
    • Inspecting the buildings, performing basic repairs, maintenance and cleaning tasks as required.
    • Book and service all accommodation offerings on the site.
    • Ensures all property and premises are clean and tidy.
  • Café Duties:
    • Prepare (or procure) foods such as salads, sandwiches, baked goods etc.
    • Ensure food is fresh and kept at a safe temperature.
    • Prepare various beverages including coffee, tea, and cold drinks.
    • Take orders, serve customers and answer their questions. Work closely with customers to answer questions and listen to complaints regarding food quality and customer service before working to resolve those complaints promptly.
    • Order from food suppliers, supervising and maintaining inventory.
    • Supervise other staff and organise work rosters.
    • Cash management responsibilities.

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • Previous experience in a managerial/supervisory role in hospitality or similar.
  • Certificate of Hygiene preferred.
  • Relevant experience as FOH / Barista in similar business.
  • Solid food & beverage knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in the provision of excellent customer service.
  • Well presented with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail, flexible and reliable.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physically fit as you will be required to lift heavy stock items and will be on your feet!

Hineuru Iwi Trust supports efforts on the ground 

The Trust is pleased to advise the iwi that the first lot of supplies was airlifted into Te Haroto yesterday. This is a fantastic result, and we welcome the support being provided by CDEM.

Rest assured; your chairman, trustees, CE and operations team are working in the background to ensure outcomes and support for those who reside in the Bay. We know that up to 60% of Hineuru iwi members live in the Hawke’s Bay, and we want to ensure that adequate and equitable support is being provided.

In saying this, to assist in the immediate efforts on the ground, the Trust has pledged $10,000 to be paid to Te Taiwhenua O Te Whanganui Ā Orotu. In addition, the trustees on the ground will conduct welfare checks with Hineuru whānau in Napier and Hastings. This will allow us to see where we can lobby for additional support and/or potentially fill any shortcomings where necessary.

Hineuru Property Limited has an opportunity for an enthusiastic passionate individual to join us as a Livestock Stock Manager on Pukenui Station, located between Napier and Taupo. This position is fixed term to cover maternity leave. The successful applicant can start immediately.

You will be reporting to the Farm Operations Manager and will have the opportunity to be involved in the day-to-day management and planning responsibilities. The key stock policies are to finish all young lambs, calves, and fawns from the breeding unit to target weights also lambing 500 breeding ewes.

The successful candidate will be required to have:

  • 3-4 well-controlled working dogs.
  • Deer experience.
  • 3-4 years of sheep and beef experience, preferred.
  • Excellent stockman ship and animal husbandry.
  • Knowledge of stock nutritional requirements.
  • Current full NZ driver’s license.
  • The ability to pass a drug test.
  • Experience in operation and maintaining farm machinery.
  • Effective communication skills and attention to detail.
  • A friendly easy-going personality.

Board appointed for new Regional Economic Development Agency

Board appointed for new Regional Economic Development Agency

Hawke’s Bay’s new Regional Economic Development Agency (REDA) is in good hands, with a highly skilled line-up of board members appointed to lead the organisation and provide a strong economic voice for the region.

The Matariki Governance Group (MGG) today endorsed the chairman and four board members, following a robust appointment process that attracted many highly qualified candidates.

MGG co-chair Alex Walker said underpinning the appointment selection was the creation of a strong organisation, with mana and positioning, that could give life to the MGG’s aspirations of a thriving Hawke’s Bay economy.

“As a regional leadership group we recognise that partnerships across iwi and hapū Māori, business, and the public and private sectors are essential to create the conditions for regional economic success.

“Imagine a Hawke’s Bay where everyone is actively engaged in, and benefitting from, a thriving regional economy – that’s our aim.

“This newly appointed board brings significant commercial and governance experience along with a strong lens and passion for Hawke’s Bay’s economic development.”

Matariki Governance Group co-chair Leon Symes said the agency would also feed into the wider aims of the MGG.

“REDA will help realise the Matariki Regional Development Strategy, which envisages Hawke’s Bay as a region where wellbeing is enjoyed by every whānau, because the right learning and career opportunities are in place to make sure nobody is left behind.”

Experienced governor and outgoing Napier Port chairman Alasdair MacLeod has been appointed the board chair.

Having held many key roles in Hawke’s Bay, he brings extensive networks, credibility, and economic acumen to lead REDA through its formation, and help set its course for the future.

With its strong business, cultural, social and environmental infrastructure, Hawke’s Bay is a region businesses, investors, talent and visitors want to come to, Mr MacLeod said.

“REDA, as Hawke’s Bay’s most influential new economic enabler, will amplify what others in the region are already doing and, alongside other business support agencies, act as a front door for business in the region.”

The four other board members also brought significant commercial and governance experience, along with a passion for Hawke’s Bay’s economic development.

  • Shayne Walker – Shayne brings a wide range of governance and commercial skills to the board, including a good understanding of the Māori economy. His governance roles have spanned multiple sectors from health to youth employment, forestry and property development.
  • Erin Simpson: Erin brings experience in the skills development space, with strong connections to the region and the Crown. He has held governance roles with entities including the Hawke’s Bay Regional Skills Leaders Group, NZ Apples and Pears Inc, and Muka Tangata, People, Food and Fibre Workforce Development Council.
  • Rawinia Kamau – Rawinia (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine) brings a strong understanding of economic development and the Māori economy to the board. Her experience has spanned project management, policy analysis, community planning and development, and general management.
  • Caren Rangi – Caren is an experienced governor, with a strong set of strategic and stakeholder management skills. A proud Cook Island Māori, her governance experience includes positions with organisations ranging from Radio New Zealand to Arts Council of NZ Toi Aotearoa, Pacific Island Homecare Services Trust, and Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

REDA’s primary focus will be on creating new platforms for growth for Hawke’s Bay by encouraging and enabling new economic activity in the region, and fostering investment and efforts to support a thriving business environment.

BBI Wood Products managing director Brendan O’Sullivan was involved in each phase of the establishment of REDA and said he was pleased to see the board had now been appointed, and was looking forward to the new entity engaging with business and industry in 2023.

“I’m excited about the potential for REDA and the difference it will make for our business sector and the Hawke’s Bay economy as a whole.”

We have an exciting opportunity for a Café Assistant to join our team at our Cafe on State Highway 5, Tarawera, Napier.

This will be a busy and varied role that would suit a self-motivated customer service guru. You will be required to take responsibility for providing friendly “front of house” customer service excellence to assist in maintaining our goal of 100% happy customers. Specifically, your duties will include the following:

  • Meeting and greeting all café customers taking orders promptly.
  • Working within a team to ensure that all customers’ orders are accurately processed, actioned and delivered as quickly as possible.
  • Opening and closing duties at the beginning or end of a shift.

The successful candidate will have the following:

Hineuru Iwi Trust is pleased to announce, following the first official trustees’ hui, that Mana Hazel has been appointed Chair of the Trust, and Elizabeth Waiwiri-Hunt has been appointed Deputy Chair. These appointments were endorsed unanimously by the trustees. 
Chair, Mana Hazel, said the following post his appointment:
“E kore e mimiti ngā rau o te aroha, ngā reo whakamiha ki ngā kaitiaki o mua. Nā koutou ko ngā kuia ko ngā koroua i whakatū ai i ngā pou e whitu nei. Kia pupuri tonu i te mauri i te manako nui o rātou mā kia takatu ai ngā uri o Hineuru. Kia kōkiri ngātahi ai mai Hineuru mō Hineuru.

With gratitude, we humbly acknowledge our previous Trustees of Hineuru Iwi Trust and those pakeke from the beginning of this journey. Taking on board the dreams and aspirations of our kuia and koroua by establishing the framework, the seven pou, as our foundation. In preparation and anticipation to advance all our aspirations mai Hineuru mō Hineuru.

Now that we, the new trustees, have completed our first official board meeting, with part one of our two-part induction complete, we can settle into our roles and look to the future. I am personally excited for the journey ahead.”
Deputy Chair, Elizabeth Waiwiri-Hunt, said the following post her appointment:
“As new trustees, we thank the iwi for your vote of confidence. It is indeed a privilege to be elected. This is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and along with my fellow trustees, we will do our absolute due diligence to achieve the aspirations of Hineuru with the utmost respect, care, and dedication.

In saying this, we ask that you give us time and patience whilst we learn and understand our roles. With trust in our hearts and a strong foundation based on reliability, honesty, transparency and goodwill, we can aspire and look to the future.

The board will meet once more before Christmas. This hui will complete the induction for the trustees.

Unanimous support for Hineuru Iwi Trust to become a member of the National Iwi Chairs Forum

In the first week of November, Hineuru Iwi Trust (HIT) sent a delegation of four to the National Iwi Chairs Forum (NICF). This year’s November forum was hosted by Te Ariki o Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Tā Tumu te Heuheu in Taupō.

As usual, NICF was a schedule packed two days; however, many benefits are derived from our attendance. Many of the most topical issues facing Māoridom were discussed during the forum. These were wide-ranging, from Government Reform to Housing, Climate Change and much more.

Notably, at this forum, HIT was officially made a member of NICF. In the past, we have attended the forum; however, we welcome the unanimous endorsement to be a member in our own right. It is only fitting that we acknowledge Ngāti Pāhauwera Development Trust and Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated as they, as existing members of NICF, endorsed our application which enabled it to be tabled. HIT was also pleased to endorse the application by Mana Ahuriri Trust to become a member of NICF. With the plethora of issues facing whānau, hapū and iwi, we must work together, support, and encourage unity amongst iwi Māori to benefit us all.

Trustee, Mana Hazel, gave the following statement about his experience at the forum:

“Anō te pai, te āhuareka o te nohotahi o ngā tuākana me ngā tēina i runga i te whakaaro kotahi! Hineuru ka eke!

The unified and collaborative approach of iwi entities and Māori broadly was once an ideal of science fiction! However, today our whanaunga are sitting pokohiwi ki pokohiwi – rae ki te rae, holding the Kawanatanga to account with highly skilled and experienced technicians.

It was good to see smaller iwi contributing in the same space as the much larger iwi. Despite the difference in size, we all face the same challenges. This, to me, demonstrates the value for us as Hineuru in this forum.

It was timely for Hineuru join this forum in Taupō alongside our whānaunga Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Ngāti Kahungunu iwi, as well as Ngāti Pāhauwera! Hineuru māranga mai! Hineuru ka eke!”

We look forward to ongoing resource sharing and collaboration with fellow members. All members of NICF, no matter how big or small can participate fully. HIT intends to participate actively in the forum for the betterment of Hineuru.

1. Elections: It’s time to elect trustees for the marae

  • Three trustees are required to make up our numbers.
  • Nominations are to be lodged with the Te Haroto Marae Secretary.
  • A Nomination Form is attached.

2. Current Trustees: Mere Clark, Tuhuiao Kahukiwa, Hinewai Crawford, and Toi Tawhai.

  • The THM Charter allows for up to seven trustees to be on the committee.

3. Duties: administer, develop, maintain, and preserve the marae.

4. Voluntary Service while this is a voluntary position, certain expenses will be reimbursed.

5. Nominations:

  • Nominees must be adult Hineuru members.
  • Nominees need to be confirmed by two adult Hineuru members – see Nomination Form.

6. Closing date for nominations: 5.00 pm, Fri 25 November 2022.
