We wish to inform whānau that Jared Pullar, who has served the Trust with distinction for the past four years, will be stepping down from his role as Specialist Advisor – Procurement & Governance, effective 1 August 2025.

Since joining us in early 2021, Jared has made a significant and lasting contribution to our mission. His passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the iwi have had a profound impact.

While we are saddened to see him go, we are equally proud to share that Jared has recently been appointed to a senior role within Government. This notable appointment is a testament to his expertise, principled leadership, and the high regard in which he is held across the sector.

Commenting on his resignation, Jared said:

“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve our iwi over the past four years. I am grateful to the Trust for the confidence placed in me throughout this time, and I leave with a deep appreciation for the work we have undertaken together. While departing my role within the Trust, I still look forward to seeing whānau at kaupapa or whakamoemiti as I will remain an active iwi member. Kāti, nei rā āku mihi ki a tātou katoa”

Hineuru Iwi Trust invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from suitably qualified and experienced individuals, organisations, or businesses interested in operating the café area located at Tarawera. This unique opportunity provides an exceptional platform to contribute to the cultural, social, and economic vitality of the Tarawera region, while delivering high-quality food and beverage services to locals and visitors alike.

About the Opportunity

Nestled along the scenic State Highway 5 corridor, the Tarawera Cafe Area occupies a site of profound natural beauty and deep cultural significance. This unique location attracts a steady stream of visitors, including tourists, local whānau, and those travelling through or exploring the wider region.

The cafe premises are now open to lease opportunities, with terms to be developed in partnership with the selected applicant. This is a unique opportunity to establish a presence in a setting that blends natural beauty with rich cultural heritage—ideally positioned to become a sought-after destination for travellers, local whānau, and visitors alike.

Objectives

Through this EOI process, we seek a partner who:

  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of food and beverage service delivery.
  • Shows a commitment to high standards of customer experience and hospitality.
  • Embraces sustainable practices and operates in a way that respects the environment.
  • Reflects or supports local values, heritage, and the mana of the Tarawera area.
  • Offers innovation in service delivery and community engagement.

Proposal Requirements

  • A description of your business or organisation.
  • Relevant experience and qualifications.
  • A preliminary vision for the café operation.
  • Operational capacity.
  • Any partnership or collaborative ideas with local iwi, community groups, or tourism operators.

Evaluation and Next Steps

EOIs will be assessed based on alignment with community and operational objectives, experience, capacity to deliver, and innovation. Shortlisted applicants may be invited to participate in a further Request for Proposal process or direct negotiations.

TRUSTEE ELECTION – CALL FOR NOMINATIONS OF TRUSTEES

Hineuru Iwi Trust is the post-settlement governance entity that manages the settlement assets of the Trust on behalf of Ngāti Hineuru iwi.

The current trustees are due to retire and an election is now required to elect seven trustees. Nominations are now sought to fill the seven vacancies on Hineuru Iwi Trust. The current trustees can stand for re-election if they choose, but must nominate in accordance with this notice.

Nominations open on Friday 11 July 2025, and close at 12 noon on Friday 8 August 2025.

Nomination forms must be made on the official form available from the Returning Officer, which can be obtained by downloading from the links in this email.

All nomination forms must be signed by at least five registered members. Candidates must also submit a written statement of skills and experience and a photograph with their completed nomination form.

Chief Executive To Step Down From Role

CHIEF EXECUTIVE TO STEP DOWN FROM ROLE

The Trustees of Hineuru Iwi Trust advise that April Hetaraka, Chief Executive, has tendered her resignation, which has been accepted. Her final day in the role will be Friday, 27 June 2025.

Since stepping into the role of Chief Executive in November 2023, April has provided strategic leadership during a pivotal phase of organisational evolution. Her focus on enhancing internal systems and functions has strengthened the Trust’s operational capability while advancing kaupapa-driven initiatives that empower whānau and uplift communities. This period of intentional development has not only positioned the Trust for sustained impact but also laid the groundwork for achieving long-term, aspirational outcomes that reflect our vision for transformative change for the benefit of iwi members.

Commenting on her departure, April said:

“It is with humility I wish Hineuru Iwi Trust all the best for its future endeavours. Ki a koutou ngā whānau whānui o Hineuru, tēnei au e mihi ana i runga i te whakaiti.”

Chairman Mana Hazel, acknowledging April’s service, said:

“E kore e mimiti ana ngā au mihi ki a koe April. Nāu anō i whakakipakipa i ngā huanga mō te iwi o Hineuru. Nāu hoki i whakapātaritari i ngā kaupapa matua mai i te iwi, mō te iwi. Nei rā ngākau whakaiti e mihi nei.”

The Trustees, on behalf of the iwi, extend their thanks to April for her service and wish her all the very best in her future endeavours.

The iwi will be kept informed of further developments as matters progress.

The next Quarterly Kaumātua Health Check-up is taking place in two weeks on Tuesday, 17 June, from 10 AM – 12 PM at the Hineuru Iwi Trust Office (14 West Quay, Ahuriri).

These health check-ups are part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being of our kaumātua. They were created from the aspirations shared by whānau during last year’s drop-in workshops and are delivered in partnership with Te Kupenga Hauora.

This time, Te Kupenga is also offering flu and covid vaccinations for those who may want to be vaccinated while popping in.

If you’re not a kaumātua yourself, please help us share this message with those who would benefit from attending.

You will play a key role in enhancing the presence and identity of Hineuru Iwi Trust, working on digital platforms, creating engaging content, and supporting our Communications Strategy.

2. Pou Taiao Projects Assistant

Are you committed to protecting and enhancing te taiao? Join us as a Pou Taiao Projects Assistant and support kaupapa that protect and enhance our whenua and wai. This full-time, fixed-term role (until June 2026) offers the chance to contribute to iwi environmental management, gain practical experience, and work alongside dedicated people.

The Trust is pleased to release the dates for this year’s Hineuru Hautapu, which will be held at Te Hāroto Marae. Different to previous years, this year includes a wānanga leading up to the ceremony.

Dates:

  • Friday 20 June, 5 PM – Wānanga begins
  • Saturday 21 June – Wānanga continues
  • Sunday 22 June, 6 AM – Annual Hautapu


Location: Te Hāroto Marae

Friday and Saturday are dedicated to wānanga. Sunday is our annual hautapu.

Whānau are welcome to attend just the hautapu on Sunday if they are unable to join the wānanga — please indicate this in the online registration form. RSVPs are essential for catering purposes.

The Trust is excited to call for registrations for our upcoming Kawakawa Balm Workshop, a two-day, hands-on experience during which whānau will learn the process of creating Kawakawa Balm.
